"Arachnia mania"

Films: Arachnia (2003)

Alias: Hell Spiders

Type: Ancient

Location: Civilized Area/Cave

Height/Weight: Twice that of large dogs.

Affiliation: Neutral

Summary: As you have already seen, many a filmmaker has pushed the boundaries of what they can get away with when it comes to making movies about spider-like abominations. These might not be the most spidery in looks, but they are arachnids, so it isn't technically false advertising.

History: Somewhere in the country, a meteor shower has awakened something from beneath the Earth. A colony of monstrous arachnids are back after millions of years of dormancy, and they're hungry. Good thing there's plenty of juicy humans for them to munch on...or submit to their queen to breed into. It's going to be a messed-up couple of days.

Notable Kills: A farmer ends up having triplets burst out of his chest.

Final Fate: After their nest is infiltrated, the arachnids are finished off when armed forces come to gun them all down. However, a few babies are shown to have survived, and are leaving to who knows where...

Powers/Abilities: Resilient hides and the ability to spit sticky web.

Weakness: The eyes are the soft spot. Or you can just light them on fire.

Scariness Factor: 3.5- Some rubber-looking props notwithstanding, the stop-motion helps give these arthropods just the creepy locomotion they need to compliment their creepy looks. Sure, they look less like spiders and more like demonic pill bugs, but who's complaining?

Trivia: -This film was directed by Brett Piper, a man who seems to love combining stop-motion with rather crude characters and increasingly bizarre monsters. He's a treasure basically...if he doesn't have any scandalous cases on him, of course.

-This film is known as, in English, "Carnivorous Spiders" in Greece.
